Peripheral Arterial Disease Treatments
Cedar Park Double-Board Certified Vascular Surgeon
Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a very common circulation problem
that numerous individuals face. Essentially, the arteries that carry blood
to your arms, and legs are narrowed and can become clogged. Due to this
blockage, normal blood flow is interrupted, which often causes pain with
movement of the affected limb.
The most common cause of PAD is atherosclerosis, which is the hardening
of your arteries that can occur as a result of smoking, high cholesterol,
and high blood pressure. This is a gradual process where scar tissues
and cholesterol begin to build up and form plaque inside the arteries,
clogging the blood vessels. If left untreated, the lack of blood flow
may require the individual to have his or her limb amputated.
As plaque buildup increases, the blood flow will narrow and restrict blood
from passing through. This then blocks oxygen and other necessary nutrients
from flowing through to their normal tissues, ultimately leading to heart
attacks, strokes, and possibly death.
In the legs, this earliest signs are trouble walking a short distance due
to pain. This is called claudication. If the blockages progress to the
point where only minimal blood flow is going to the foot, the pain becomes
severe and is present at all times, termed rest pain. At this point, you
may have critical limb ischemia which increases your chance of needing
an amputation if treatment is not undertaken.
