Why Winter Can Be a Great Time to Treat Varicose Veins

When most people think about varicose veins, they tend to think about warmer weather, shorts, swimsuits, and having their legs more visible. But if you are considering evaluation or treatment for varicose veins, fall and winter can actually be one of the best times to get started.
At Texan Vein & Vascular, we often encourage patients not to wait until spring to begin thinking about treatment. Evaluation, ultrasound testing, insurance authorization, treatment planning, and staged procedures can all take time. Starting earlier may help you complete more of your treatment plan before warmer weather returns.
Why Fall and Winter Can Be Ideal
There are several practical reasons why patients may prefer treatment during the cooler months.
1. Compression Stockings Are Often Easier to Wear: Compression stockings are commonly recommended before or after vein treatment, depending on the patient and the procedure. Many patients find them more comfortable during cooler weather than during the heat of a Central Texas summer. They are also easier to cover with pants, which can make daily wear feel a little more convenient.
2. Vein Treatment May Involve More Than One Visit: One of the biggest misconceptions patients have is that vein treatment is always a single appointment. Depending on your condition, treatment may be performed in stages and may involve more than one vein, more than one leg, or more than one type of procedure. For example, a treatment plan may include procedures such as:
● RF Ablation
● Varithena
● Asclera injections
● Follow-up ultrasound scans
● Post-treatment follow-up visits
Because treatment is often staged over time, starting in the fall or early winter may give you more time to complete your treatment plan before spring or summer.
3. Scheduling Takes Time: Another important consideration is availability. A vascular consultation may be only the first step. Depending on your symptoms and findings, you may also need a venous reflux ultrasound before treatment recommendations can be finalized.
After that, insurance authorization may be required before treatment can be scheduled. For that reason, patients who wait until January or February to start the process may find that actual treatment does not begin until much later in the spring. If your goal is to address your veins before summer, it is often better to start the evaluation process earlier than you think you need to.
4. Cooler Weather May Make Recovery More Convenient: Most modern vein treatments are minimally invasive and performed in the office. Patients are generally awake, and procedures are typically completed in less than an hour.
However, some temporary activity restrictions may still apply after treatment, and compression may be recommended. For many people, cooler months are simply a more convenient time to work these temporary changes into their routine.
5. You Can Plan Ahead for Spring and Summer: If you already know that your varicose veins bother you physically or cosmetically, waiting until warm weather arrives may put you behind schedule. Starting in the fall or winter gives you more time to:
● Complete your evaluation
● Obtain any necessary ultrasound testing
● Complete insurance authorization
● Schedule staged treatments
● Attend post-treatment scans and follow-up visits
● Allow your legs time to heal and improve before warmer weather
This can be especially helpful if you have travel, vacations, weddings, or other spring and summer plans.
What If My Varicose Veins Are Not Painful?
Not every visible varicose vein requires treatment. Some patients are mainly concerned about appearance, while others experience aching, swelling, heaviness, itching, burning, cramping, or fatigue. An evaluation can help determine whether the veins are simply cosmetic or whether there is an underlying problem such as venous insufficiency.
If treatment is appropriate, your vascular provider can explain which options make the most sense based on your symptoms and ultrasound findings.
What Is the First Step?
The first step is usually a vascular consultation. During that visit, your provider will review your symptoms, medical history, and physical exam findings. If venous disease is suspected, a venous reflux ultrasound may be recommended to evaluate how blood is flowing through the veins in your legs. Once the underlying cause is identified, a treatment plan can be developed if needed.
