Radiofrequency Ablation or "RFA": A Revolutionary Vein Treatment

This new treatment has revolutionized our ability to treat varicose veins where the main superficial veins (the greater and lesser saphenous veins) are contributing to the continued enlargement of the varicose veins. Previously, this would have involved a stripping operation or saphenous ligation. However, with this technique the saphenous vein can be obliterated in the office. A slim profile catheter is inserted into the vein under ultrasound guidance. The catheter is placed in a precise location and when turned on, caused the blood to heat up. The heated blood causes the vein to scar down and ultimately disappear.

The procedure is performed in the office under dilute local anesthesia which not only prevents pain but also cools the surrounding tissue so that the energy does not damage surrounding tissues. Patients can drive themselves home after the procedure. The individual does have to wear a surgical stocking for 2 weeks and there may be some bruising, but discomfort is minimal and should respond well to anti-inflammatory medicines which are used 1-2 days after the procedure.

 

Most patients return to work the next day. Most insurance carriers will pay for this procedure if it is medically necessary and conservative measures have failed.

 

Complications of blood clots or numbness on the inside of the leg are very rare. The typical length of the procedure may vary depending on how many veins need treatment, but on average takes about 10 minutes per vein.
